What to pack for a SUP tour in Lagos: the complete checklist

Exactly what to bring (and leave behind) for a stand up paddle tour in the Algarve — from waterproof phone cases to reef-safe sunscreen.

What we provide: every guest gets a high-quality inflatable or hard SUP board, an adjustable carbon-blend paddle, a quick-release ankle leash, a Coast Guard-approved life jacket (PFD), a 2 mm or 3/2 mm wetsuit when conditions call for it, and a dry bag for small valuables. There's nothing extra to rent.

What to wear on the board: swimwear is the base layer for everyone. In spring and autumn we recommend a rashguard or thin neoprene top over your swimsuit; in summer just sunscreen is enough. Avoid cotton — once it's wet it stays cold and heavy.

Sun protection (the most underestimated thing): The Atlantic reflects UV like a mirror. Bring SPF 50+ reef-safe sunscreen (we love brands like Stream2Sea), a wide-brim hat with a chin strap, and polarised sunglasses on a Croakies-style retainer. Lip balm with SPF is a small thing that saves a holiday.

On your feet: Reef-safe water shoes or old trainers you don't mind getting wet are ideal — the launch beach has small pebbles. Flip-flops fall off boards. Leave them with your kit on the beach.

Camera & phone: A waterproof phone case (the floating lanyard kind, around €15) is the single best purchase you can make. The light inside the sea caves at Ponta da Piedade is unreal and you will want both hands free. We also bring a GoPro on every tour and share photos free of charge afterwards.

What NOT to bring: jewellery, watches that aren't 10 ATM, hotel keys without a backup, big DSLR cameras, anything in glass. The ocean eats these things.

After the tour: A change of clothes, a fresh towel and a small €1 coin for the beach showers. Pro tip: pack a thermos of warm tea for spring and autumn paddles — there's nothing better after a wetsuit session.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to bring my own paddle board?

No — we provide premium boards, paddles, leashes, life jackets and a wetsuit if needed. Just bring swimwear, sunscreen and a towel.

Can I bring my phone on a SUP tour?

Yes. We strongly recommend a waterproof floating phone case so you can capture the caves with both hands free. Your guide will also share GoPro photos after the tour.

What should I wear paddle boarding in the Algarve?

Swimwear plus a rashguard, reef-safe SPF 50+ sunscreen, a hat with a chin strap and polarised sunglasses on a retainer.
