Best time of year to SUP in the Algarve (2026 month-by-month guide)

From glassy spring mornings to warm autumn paddles — a month-by-month breakdown of water temperature, wind, crowds and the best SUP conditions in Lagos and the Algarve.

The Algarve is one of the few places in Europe where you can stand up paddle almost every month of the year. The Atlantic stays mild thanks to the Gulf Stream, the cliffs of Lagos block most of the prevailing north wind, and clear skies dominate the calendar. That said, every month has its own personality — and picking the right one can be the difference between a glassy sunrise inside a sea cave and getting blown sideways at lunchtime.

Spring (March–May): Water temperatures climb from around 16 °C in March to 18 °C by late May. Air temperatures sit between 18 °C and 24 °C, and the Nortada (the summer north wind) hasn't fully kicked in yet. This is our favourite window for cave tours — almost no boat traffic, soft golden light, and the cliffs are at their greenest after the winter rains. A 2 mm shorty wetsuit is enough on most days.

Early summer (June): The shoulder of high season. Water around 19–20 °C, long days, and reliable mornings. Afternoons can pick up wind, so we run almost all SUP cave tours before 11 am. Booking 1–2 weeks ahead is plenty.

Peak summer (July–August): The warmest water of the year (21–23 °C), virtually guaranteed sunshine, but the highest crowds at Ponta da Piedade. The single biggest tip we give travellers: take the first slot of the day. By 10 am the boats arrive and the magic of the caves disappears. Book at least 3–4 weeks in advance.

Late summer & early autumn (September–October): Arguably the best month overall is September. Water peaks at 22 °C, the August crowds are gone, and the late-summer light makes the orange cliffs glow. October is still very paddleable — wetsuits become useful by month's end.

Winter (November–February): Tours run on calm days and we monitor the swell forecast closely. Water dips to 15–16 °C, so a 4/3 mm wetsuit is standard. Crowds are non-existent and storm-light photography is unreal. If your trip is flexible, this is the cheapest, quietest time to paddle the Algarve.

Wind tip: The Algarve coastline runs east–west, which means the Nortada (NW wind) hits the cliffs side-on. Mornings are reliably calmer than afternoons across the entire year — if you only remember one thing from this guide, book the early slot.
