Benagil Cave vs Ponta da Piedade: which Algarve sea cave should you visit?
An honest comparison from the guides who paddle both — distance, crowds, photos, cost and which one is actually the better experience.
These are the two most photographed sea caves in Portugal, and almost every Algarve visitor wants to see at least one. We guide tours at both, and we get asked the same question every week: which one is better? Here's our honest, no-fluff comparison.
Benagil Cave (Algar de Benagil) is the famous one — a single huge cave with a circular skylight in the roof, located 40 km east of Lagos. It became Instagram-famous around 2015 and now sees thousands of visitors a day in summer. It is genuinely spectacular, but you cannot land inside it (a 2018 ruling made the beach off-limits) and at peak hours there can be 50+ kayaks queuing to enter.
Ponta da Piedade is a 2 km stretch of coastline south of Lagos with dozens of caves, arches, grottos and hidden beaches. There is no single 'famous' cave — instead you spend 2 hours weaving through a landscape. You can land on hidden beaches inside the area, the boat traffic is lighter, and the geology is arguably more dramatic.
Crowds: Benagil at 11 am in July is mayhem. Ponta da Piedade at the same time is busy but not overwhelming. At sunrise, both are magical and almost empty.
Photos: Benagil's skylight is iconic — the single best shot in the Algarve. Ponta da Piedade gives you 30 different photos instead of one perfect one. Both are worth the SD card space.
Logistics from Lagos: Ponta da Piedade is on Lagos's doorstep — 25 minutes walking or a 5-minute drive. Benagil requires a 40-minute drive each way, then a guided kayak/SUP from Praia de Benagil (no swimming in alone — it's prohibited and dangerous).
Cost: Ponta da Piedade SUP tour from Lagos: €40–€55 (2 hours, includes everything). Benagil SUP tour from Benagil: €30–€40 (90 minutes, includes everything). Add €60–€80 of taxi/fuel if you don't have a car.
Difficulty: Both are beginner-friendly with a guide. Benagil is more exposed — it's a Portuguese-style ocean cove rather than a sheltered headland — so it's slightly more dependent on the swell forecast.
Our verdict: If you have one morning, do Ponta da Piedade — it's easier from Lagos, less crowded and you see more. If you have a second day and a car, add Benagil at sunrise (06:30 launch in summer). Doing both is the dream Algarve trip.
